Was thinking the same thing to myself the other day. Also too bad they starting modding the gun. Cutting the top cover like that. I am still convinced that the hinge for the top cover is dove tailed into the front trunnion. Unless it is possibly incorporated into the barrel pin to somehow secure it???
Also looks like the back of the gas tube sets on top of the front trunnion as well??
I have wondered the same. But in order for it to be pinned down into place, it would have to have material under the barrel pin. But that is where the barrel is secured. Maybe on the sides, but even that would be tight.
i wish we could get to the bottom of this. have a couple projects coming up to clone one.
the next year izzy krinks were one piece. slightly larger hinge block that stuck ahead of the trunnion.
this one is like 76-8 range, the 76 having the tubular triangle stock.
this one sure does look to be 2 piece though.
the saiga shotguns are welded but i never saw anything else they did by welding other than spot welds.
2. The front trunnion has slots like a Galil, and the bottom of hinge block is cut like a Galil gas tube. It slides in from the front and the gas tube locks it in place.
i would put money on it being a one piece forging. ive seen pictures of the next years prototype that is farther ahead and it is one piece.
if it was welded like the picture of a more modern one that is floating around youd see it.
it looks like it has the spring loaded plunger like we are used to to lock the gas tube, idk how the gas tube would lock it in place.
there isnt a lot of meat in in the ears that stick up on a trunnion nor is there much between the top of the trunnion and the bore the barrel goes in.
not a lot of options on something that is the same size as a ak-74 trunnion.
I agree with you on this. I will also say I think the easiest way to get there now, would be machining in a dovetail for this piece to press into place. Then maybe tack weld from the inside? It's definitely different from the modern style hinge block.
for some reason I still think it attaches to the barrel similar to the Krinks we know... possibly more meat under where the gas tube seats.... I have a pretty clear picture of it and when I zoom in it looks like its 2 peaces for sure...cant see any weld spots from the outside at least .... I wish I could post the picture .. anyone tell me how to post ? its possible they noticed that the design was weak and they ditched the design and went with what everyone has now the Tula ones... just a thought .. ??
