And the solution to this is ride a bike, don't buy anything made out of petroleum, and live life happily.

Okay before you wack me for this read it all.

We (Americans) travel greater distances than anyone else in the world to go to work school shopping etc. We drive the least fuel efficient vehicles. We have a poor mass transit system. We have resources that are not being exploited by us (although foreign companies are tapping our off shore oil deposits while we are prevented from pumping them i.e gulf of Mexico) We have enjoyed and squandered an long economic run funded by debit spending and cheap energy costs. We have thrown away decade after decade of time to step up to the plate and elect officials who could have planned ahead to prepare (although most of us personally do not). for the inevitable energy price jumps. Our children have been raised to expect things out grandfathers could only dream of.
Now today China and the rest of the far east is growing by massive proportions and we (you and I) fund this growth (what do you buy that is made here in the USA?). With this rise in products comes a rise in people who are much like us, meaning they want MORE, this includes energy.
The US has been printing money like mad (now worse by printing money for theese "rebate" checks, if there is no matching cut in spending it is only a further devaluation of the dollar), basic economics is clear that printing paper currency debases that currency thus weakening it. Add to that the massive counterfeiting going on (ever wonder why the currency is changing every couple of years???) further debasing the value of the dollar. A significant portion of our oil comes from the middle east, Who among us has not known the middle east is a volatile area? The mid east used to NEED our dollars, now they can sell to other developing areas.

Oil companies are constantly being attacked for "windfall profits", What are "windfall profits"?? is it a profit margin of 6% 9% 15% where do you call it windfall? Many small businesses hover at 6-10% Oil companies at 11%. BANKS at 15-19%. Who is making "windfall" profits?? Banks! the same damn companies we (you and I tax payers) are bailing out for ridiculous loans to people who should not have gotten a 100% loan for an overvalued property. Now who do the banks and oil companies pay money to when they make money? You and I, through 401k, 403b and other investments.

    So to summarize,
We have failed to plan ahead
We have failed to educate ourselves and our children
    OPEC is capitalism at work
We are now socialism in development
We sold Iran our printing presses (unique presses)
    We sold China technological secrets
We have consistently failed to elect leaders who plan ahead and plan for us, instead they plan for themselves
We have permitted this and in fact promote it

So when we fill up that SUV to go to wal-mart 10 miles away to get that plastic junk we really don't NEED, then swing by the public socialized school to get our kids jamming on their I pods watching movies on flat screen TVS in the SUV, remember to blame others, its become the American way for many.

I grew up in the Middle East, lived in Europe for a while and every day EVERY DAY I missed my country. I am afraid my son will grow up and not realize what is being lost here by us everyday bit by bit.

    Tirade over.
The tipping point to socialism has been reached.

I don't think oil money alone can do that, otherwise texas would have looked like that at one time. They actually have some good incentives to make companies move and invest there just like Ireland did in the 90's. If New Orleans had the same tax structure and benefits it could look exactly the same.

I've ridden my bike the past two weeks, saved 50 bucks in gas. I still drive on the weekends and still race when there's an event in town, BUT I feel like I should be funding the middle east as little as possible, China too. BUT HEY, when 911 happened and they said the terrorists got the money from selling drugs, and "shame on all you drug users" how is it that we cannot blame "all you gas users, and Made in China users"? Last year I sent about 2 grand to the middle east for my gas, how much did they send me? How much did China send me? SO, tryin harder to pay that extra for that same domestic (granted, just spent lots on Russian and Serbian ammo) and I'm still buying some gas... but we need to all start taking some responsibility. Walk out of a store if they dont have something made in America (hell, I'll buy sandpaper made in Canada), get that healthy exercize... I feel we should be giving Americans more dollars.
K, thanks for letting me rant too.... vz58, you got me going.

Kind of strays off topic but...

We couldn't have possibly imagined that our lives of excess and waste would last forever. Over 2/3rds of the Earth's population lives in what we consider "poverty" while we burn our gas through our V8 trucks that have never hauled anything but groceries and blow our hard earned cash on shit society and the media tries to brainwash us into thinking we need. I have become more and more disgusted with the American public in general (and I wasn't crazy about it in the first place) ever since 9/11. I'm tired of seeing upper-middleclass housewifes driving around with their stupid fucking "Support our Troops!" magnets on their 60 thousand dollar cars when in reality they haven't done a fucking thing to support anything except the decline of our society. Everything is so backwards right now it's ridiculous, people just GIVE IN and submit to anything they see on TV, whether it be the fools trying to convince us we had a reason to invade Iraq, a commercial about a new cell-phone that is 25% thinner than the last one, or a fast food advertisement telling you how much you want a 1200 calorie sandwich for only $3.99. But the news telling you about global warming? Naaah, not in my lifetime. Or ethnic cleansing in some country you don't care about? We'll say "Awww..." and change the channel. Honestly, if things do not change VERY dramatically soon I hope our system just collapses and we start over anew. If not for our current careless and foolish system to be replaced by a better one then just to teach everyone a lesson. I think we all, myself included, are to be held accountable for what is going to happen to us when the trucks stop delivering to any store except Walmart because they can't afford the gas and people begin going hungry because they simply can't afford food anymore. Our situation really is getting dire, we're not going to make it much longer like this, and frankly I don't want us to.

The only reason I am in this country is because it speaks my native language and lets me own guns (for now). I think we may be broken beyond repair.

I love the USA and everything about it. I worked and studied hard my whole life to live the American dream that my ancestors fought and died for. If you don't like it move, or go back to your uneducated donkey fucking Country. How dare you wish poverty and starvation to this fine nation. GO HOME
