I wouldn’t say it was a waste Romstar1. Im sure the new people to the hobby will learn from this thread. After all, those are the two most popular calibers.

I'm pretty sure both Warsaw Pact and NATO intentionally designed their ammunitions to be completely non-compliant to each other's weapons, whenever possible anyway. In some cases(no pun intended) such as 9x18mm/9x19mm pistol ammo and 81mm/82mm mortars rounds the 1mm offset was implemented specifically so we each couldn't field the other guy's munition.

Where did this rumor come from and has anyone had success with this? Neither chamber in the other. When you google it some say its possible but how if the bullet doesn't chamber???
And.300BLK "doesn't chamber" in 5.56, but that doesn't stop people from firing .300BLK in a 5.56 AR does it?

I have absolutely no interest in actually trying 5.56x45 in a 7.62x39 chamber but glancing at the chamber dimensions suggests that a 5.56 round might chamber -- if it did, the ballistics would be nearly useless, with an effective range very close to muzzle contact

I shoot 5.56 out of my Saiga AK. Works perfectly.

Oh. Wait. It's chambered for 5.56. Never mind.

I too have had a Vietnam vet tell me this. I didn't want to argue so I just said ok but in my head I was thinking even if it did fire it'd barely make it out of the barrel. I guess this thread pretty much confirms it won't work.

Years ago I was reading in an old US Army field manual (forgot which one); it said that 7.62x51mm NATO could be fired out of a Mosin Nagant chambered in 7.62x54r in an emergency. It did mention possible adverse effects.

Perhaps this factoid evolved into the one rumor mentioned here.

    It can! I did it!

Waaay back when I first got into guns and didn't know shit. Had a M38 carbine, went to a range and asked for 7.62 ammo.....well ......I got 7.62 ammo, just not the right one!

Loaded 5 rounds and proceeded to shoot. I don't remember accuracy but it was hard to extract (no rim) and all the cases were cracked. Last round the case completely cracked in half on the bottom 1/3. The bottom portion came out and the rest of the case was stuck in the chamber

I do recall seeing a video of an incorrect cartridge firing out of a mosin. It was either 7.61x51 or possibly 308. The rifle fired fine. The bolt wouldn't extract the cartridge of course. I'm betting accuracy would be garbage and you'd probably end up damaging the chamber eventually.
