That was just the gunner, not the entire crew. AVM2 Loyce Edward Dean's rear turret took a direct hit from a 40mm flak round on a bombing run over the Philippines killing him instantly. The decision to intern him at sea in the aircraft was made as his remains were so badly twisted into the airframe removal would be impossible. The pilot was well known for nursing badly damaged planes back to safety. The CO and XO of the USS Essex presided over the funeral as did a Rear Admiral. As the aircraft slipped beneath the waves a flyover was performed by 2 sister Avengers of the Essex. He was 23 years old.

There's videos and articles out there on the event but I won't post them as this thread is devoted to photo stills.

Sorry, meant crew member, obviouly the whole crew didn’t parish or else the plane wouldn’t have made it back to the carrier. Thanks for the elaboration for those who don’t know the story.

The picture of the plane crash is a North American XB-70 Valkyrie with its rudders knocked off. Only two were made. The other one is on display at the Air Force museum in Dayton, Ohio. The plane that collided with the XB-70 that is on fire is a Lockheed F-104 Starfighter.

There were actually a few cases of mortally wounded pilots getting their shot-up crews back to their carriers before expiring, in some cases right in the cockpit.

Who are you referring to? If it was me I was just explaining the photo. I was not trying to start a fight.

Nor was I. Pity that things sometimes get interpreted that way in here.

Anyhoo... more from Nam. I've always had a fascination w/the more poignant shots that came out of that war. Many if not most of the ones I've posted are by Nick Ut, who won several awards for his coverage the conflict to include the Pulitzer.

Communist caught during the Chinese revolution. A bit graphic I know, but still a historical picture.
