    Shotguns?

    Hey,

I know this is an AK website but I am looking to buy my first shotgun. I know, I know.

I like 12 gauge, so Ill probably stick with that. I thought about buying a VEPR but I dont want to spend 1200 on a shotgun

I like semi autos, and pumps. no double barrels though.

    Brands? Models?

I wont be hunting, just recreational shooting like clay pigeons and such.

Ithaca Model 37 for pump. For auto get the Vepr or a Beretta. There's some decent prices out there right now on Vepr 12's.

I grew up around shotguns. For recreational shooting something along the lines of a Maverick 88 or a Mossberg 500 will work just fine for recreational shooting

Buy the shortest barrel you can find that has choke tubes and you'll be ok. For general use I prefer a plain old pump over any militarized semi auto.

If you are not hunting and are just looking for recreational activities you might want to consider a double barrel for clay pigeons, skeet, etc. If it's not your style you'll do fine with a semi-automatic like a Browning A5. But really, if you're looking just to do sports, a over/under like Citori does great. Don't mean to attack another guy on here but DO NOT buy the shortest barrel possible if you are trying to recreation shoot, get a 28" to 32". I couldn't imagine going to shoot clays and see a guy with a VEPR 12 there...

You can't go wrong with a Browning, there a bit more expensive but it's well worth the quality. If you don't want a Browning, Beretta makes nice shotguns as well like the Silver Pigeon.

My suggestion is out of your price range so I'll offer these...

    Semi:
    Benelli M2
    Beretta

    Pump:
    Rem 870 or Mossberg 590

If you can swing a little more and find a good deal...Benelli M4. They're the bees knees.

    ^ This.

I've an 870 Police Magnum, outstanding SG but I prefer the safety placement of Mossbergs. Remember, switching out barrels on either for different work is as easy as switching out uppers on an AR, and choke technology has come a long way.

Remington 870. Simples, solid firearm. Police trades are often around $200, sometimes less. I know because I bought 2 of them. Both police magnums

I have an 870 Police with extended tube with ghost ring installed. Nice parked finish and a great little shotgun

I have extensive experience with the shotgun and other weapons.
    Certified instructor.
Trained at the Ohio Police Academy, Smith and Wesson Academy and several others.
Put on training seminars with Massad Ayood.
Best loads for the shotgun against gobblins is 12 bore #1 and/or #4 buck.
At ranges past bad breath distances the 1 ounce slug.
Ask the 50 + deer that fell to the 12 gauge slug in Ohio.
Now we can use certain rifle caliber.
Took my last 8 point with the 45-70.
    Bang, flop.

Remington 870 tactical (sights and screw in chokes) for a pump

Mossberg 930 SPX for a semi and my #1 favorite. It's so smooth and fast.

In either, I find the federal tru-ball slugs for distance, 00 for social use and #4 buck for varmints

    WHAT?! WHEN???????

That's AWESOME! I think we can also hunt suppressed and I was thinking at the time "yeah well it's possible to suppress a shotgun but eh" but I might actually have to get out there again now that we can use rifles finally.
