Talk me out of a CZ99

I've been thinking about getting a more modern pistol.

Is there any reason why I shouldn't get a Zastava model 99?

What's the max I should pay for one?

Are there better choices for the money?

I did a search and it's the classic European coping another European design. The Wikipedia entry didn't say it but it's a copy of a Sig. Now a Sig is available and has more accessories for the pistols as well.
But if you must have it just remember parts will be hard to come by.

It's a very well-made pistol, with a chrome-plated and lined barrel. The CZ99 omits the slide release in favor of a decocker (ambidextrous) which both decocks the hammer and releases the slide. They are well-made pistols. The South African Tressitu and the Israeli Golan are similar. The CZ99 is reliable.

While the 999/Charles Daly ZDA is out there...so you could possibly get parts...that is an issue.

However if you like firearms with the names of dead states ("Yugoslavia") - it is cool to have.

    This.

Or a Glock 17/19, or a Beretta M92FS. Hell, even a S&W 5906 police trade in for $300.00....you can still get parts and service on them.

Whenever I see a "talk me out of" thread, even if it's a steaming pile, it's hard to talk someone out of what they've decided.

A buddy who has an armorer's gig over in Iraq is dealing with these things and keeping them running. The company he's working for (Brit) bought them to issue to their PMC's, mainly because of cost, and it's a nightmare keeping them running.

Re: Talk me out of a CZ99

I wouldn't say the CZ99 is a direct clone of the 226, to compare them as such is really doing the OP a disservice.

To the OP: Before you take the advice of people that have not owned one of these pistols, you should go over to the cz99 forum and poke around in their english language section. Here is the URL: http://www.cz99.org/board/index.php

If you are worried about magazine availability you can modify Beretta 92 mags to fit. You can see two of these modified magazines in the picture below. I have owned two pistols in this pattern and the performance and design simplicity exceeds the 226.

Good Luck with whatever you choose.

OK let me ask you this, why are you thinking about this pistol specifically?

And overall, what is your purpose for getting a 'more modern pistol'?

    Well, I have always appreciated Serbian workmanship. (I own an M48A, M24/47, M57, M59/66, M70B1)
It's supposedly just as good as it's more expensive SIG cousin. I'm not paying for the SIG name.
It comes in .40 or 9x19.

All my other guns are of cold war vintage and change is good.

What does "SIG in the ghetto" mean Templar?
It means that they aren't holding up well, and that the workmanship is wanting.

You aren't necessarily paying for a "name", you're paying for a level of quality and reliability that is attached to that name (usually).

If you want one, buy one. I keep telling myself not to post in these kinds of threads because when you let someone know something that runs counter to what they want to hear, you become the bad guy.

As a collectable, sure, but there are better options out there for a serious use practical defense piece for under $500.00.

If I could find one of the ones that was imported right before the start of the Balkan Civil Wars, I'd be interested in it from a historical point of view, and the ones that made it in to the US in 1990 or so appeared well made. They also have wooden grips.

Lots of guns look "good enough" at face value but when considering a defensive gun, take a look at who else is using them around the world and their track record in service under high round counts and field use.

No one, besides the Serbs and a few PSC's that bought them at a price point, are using these things.

    *edited to add.....

Do I think it would fall apart on you? Probably not.
Do I think it would kaboom on you? If you're using quality ammo, no.
Do I think you'll have a very hard time finding holsters, spare mags and parts, and service if you need it? Absolutely.

If it's going to be a light duty use pistol and you want it 'cause you just want it, buy it.

If you are seriously looking for a defensive pistol that you are going to carry, then there are far better options.

Re: Talk me out of a CZ99

I agree with Templar. SIG did not become a "name" by putting out shitty products over the years. They have a huge track record of military and police usage. One of my favorite pistols in my collection is a JJ dated P226. I bought this new in DEC.'88 and it has remained with me while others have come and gone. For the record I currently own a South African TZ99, which is a licensed copy of the CZ99, and it is an excellent and accurate shooter. However parts and mags can be hard to find and expensive. I do believe European American Armory is currently importing parts but I do not know in what quantity.
Join us and live in peace, or continue on your present course and face obliteration. The decision rests with you.

Re: Talk me out of a CZ99

    1. I do think and never said SIG made shitty products.

    2. My mind is no where near made up nor my hear set on this Zastava pistol.
I'm merely asking for opinions from perhaps more know legible and experienced
    persons than myself.

O.k guys, it sounds like the CZ99 may not be such a good deal after all.
