AK chest rig

Postby CDALY05 » Tue Dec 06, 2011 8:16 am

Well I finished up a gear project a couple days ago. It is a chest rig designed to hold(you guessed it!) AK mags,4 of them to be exact, any caliber. I used 2 layers of 1000D cordura with a sheet of 3mm closed-cell foam laminated between the two for the base and single layer cordura on the pouches with reinforcing on the lower mag pockets. A couple of cargo pouches flanking the lot and voila-a simple rig to hold the basics. I am happy with the finished product and as always learned a few things along the way. Thanks for looking.

That looks really nice, always had a thing for chestrigs with the proven chicom layout (ext the cargo pouches oc). Did you have to buy a stronger sewing machine, or did an ordinary one cut it?

Keep the weight low and carrys just what you need.

Looks great! I did a similar project earlier this year, but yours is much higher quality. Hope you don't mind if I post a pic

My objective here was to get a bra for as little money as possible. I just used fabric from a set of huge pillows that were going to be thrown away. The only thing I paid for was the webbing for the straps. I even made the buckles by hand. I don't have grommets in the bottom for drainage, I just have some openings in those bunched up areas in the corners. I also had some caps on the ends of the straps I made out of sheet metal, but they ended up being a pain and I recently removed them and went with the even simpler sewn line to hold it together.

Would you consider making a few of these for board members?
I for one would buy one.

Cummbiadude-good looking rig,you did a good job of retaining the chi-com flavor.

Thanks for the kind words guys-I hoped you AK lovers would appreciate my work over here. For those inquiring about purchasing one, check your pms.

Eight 30rd metal magazines in 7.62 would weigh 15lbs.

Even eight 30rd plums in 5.45 would still weigh 9lbs.

Something to keep in mind

Thought I would just keep adding on to this thread instead of starting a new one every time.
Here is my latest rig. Just a simple 3-mag design with pals for extra stuff. I kept the pouch dimensions close to the original chi-com rig for better coverage.

Not sure if this is off topic or not, but I am looking for someone who can make me some suspenders for a "battle belt" from some tan automotive seat belt straps.

Seat belt webbing is great stuff to use, very strong and thin. I made a set of suspenders for my warbelt using the stuff. I could make you something similar if you want, send me a pm.

Nice! If I can make a suggestion though...Make the shoulder straps a bit wider, and maybe add some padding.

Yeah I think 2" webbing would be a good idea too. Haven't decide on what style padded straps yet though, fixed or detachable.

I think if you keep it simple, it will hold down cost, and be eaiser to make. What about just using wider straps, double thickness?
