OK guys. Thanks to John Gault specs are obtained for the factory firing pin and my friend with the lathe and surface grinder will be popping a few of these out shortly. He wants to know how many to make and I know I need two. Who else needs a firing pin? Cost is to be determined and ill update the the thread with that info shortly, and this thread is to give him an idea if its going to be worth it to run off a whole bunch of these. So if you need a firing pin put your name in this thread so a count can be made for him. Thanks!
Update!
After a couple of failed attempts with my machinist and the use of A2 steel, I received an e-mail from Kevin at Black Dog Machine. He now has the upgraded firing pins in stock and a healthy supply of them for us WASR .22 owners! Get them from BDM! They are worth it! They are a great upgrade and convert these bolts from floating firing pin to spring loaded, so no chance of a slam fire AT ALL! Thanks again Kevin for supplying all us .22 shooters with your innovative products!
VASCAR, I now know how hard it is to get parts for these and also know some other owners are in the same boat as me (need a completely new FP), and others want a spare just in case. Just trying to pass along some karma so to speak since these are available NOWHERE it seems.
Ok guys, I'm ordering the rod for these Wed, and the discussion now has turned to the material the firing pin will be made from. I think A2 would be a good steel choice as its air hardening, so heat treat should be simple, and its fairly easy to machine. What do you guys think about Stainless? Would that hold up to the hammering its going to take? Looking for a steel that hardens easily and is tough as can get. Any suggestions from the crowd? Thanks for all the input guys, and this will be coming together within the next two weeks. Update shortly on pricing once I get materials in order.
A2 steel is ordered. And yes Gator, BDM was planning the spring loaded upgrade but has not made them available yet. And once he does ill be ordering one.
eviloxisurf, Black Dog Machine planned on making them (spring loaded upgraded FP) and i wont be stepping on his toes. That was his design and idea. I and im sure many others are ANXIOUSLY awaiting his announcement that those upgraded FP's are ready for sale. And as soon as they are I'll be ordering one!
I just wanted an original design replacement for the one I have that the tip broke off of. I was pretty pissed too when it happened. It ate about 75 rounds with 3 stoppages, grabbing every empty shell and throwing it into next week, and was just starting to run REALLY smooth when it broke and halted the whole test fire. Once these are done I'll be doing my build writeup, since my build was a little different because I used one of akmanators .22 lower rails.Update shortly with price, etc...
Im actually an incredibly moral, good person(at least my clients would agree). But, when someone says they are going to do something and takes a year or more to do it... Well they either should have done it or shouldnt have talked about it in the first place.....
Sorry this is taking so long guys. Health issues have been keeping me down as of late, and my machinist is doing this on his own time building custom surface grinding jigs etc, but there are 3 firing pins shipping today for testing so I can confirm they fit and work. Once ok'd the production starts. I still dont have a rock solid price yet as he has'nt charged me yet, but I'll post it as soon as possible. I'll attempt a range test video ASAP when they land as well.
