    First purchase

New member here. Interested in buying an AK variant in the new future, been looking into options.

What would you guys recommend, given the current market, for a good "value" rifle?

Also, I'm not in an area with any significant retail dealers. I get my transfers through a gunsmith down the street who works out of his house, so I'd likely be buying a rifle off Gunbroker or the like, with only pictures to go by. In that scenario, is it better to go for a rifle that was imported complete (ban-era Romanians seem to have a decent reputation)? As opposed to a US-assembled kit that may or may not have been done right?

    Thanks for your help.

    Welcome to the forum!
Geez.....your first post and already opening a can of worms. LOL!
Seems like a lot of guys like the WASRs. I have no experience with them, but I read a lot and come across many threads. Through my observations.....these seem to be the best bang for the buck. True complete surplus imports will cost you if you can find. Everything else is made 922r compliant here in the US by vendors that swap parts such as Century, or rebuilt here in the US out of surplus parts.
Having a neighbor with FFL is great. I still keep thinking that I should get mine. Just haven't verified the initial cost yet.

    Arsenal SLR-107R 7.62x39...

A decently priced bulgarian made gun. US akms just aren't making the grade just yet.
There are some decent US assembled kits but do a ton of research before buying any of them.

Arsenals and VEPRs have earned a great reputation.

Im nowhere near as informed on different variants as pretty much everyone else here, but most of the guns ive bought were FFL transfers. I won't use gunbroker, and I only use armslist to find local opportunities within the state that are reasonably close. AtlanticFirearms has a well-earned reputation for standing by what they sell if there are any defects or problems. Classicfirearms was a very easy and pleasant seller to me as well if they have what you are looking for. Aside from that, my only other advice is good luck and do your homework with what you end up buying! Its worth it and can save you a big headache with AKs.

I agree with the above SLR-107, or any Arsenals for that matter. But, if you're looking for an even cheaper option WASR's are great and have a great price.
